Lunch Break Calculator

Work out net worked hours after lunch. Enter your clock-in and clock-out times and lunch minutes; the tool subtracts the break and shows the result in decimal hours and H:MM, and it handles shifts that cross midnight.

What this calculator does

The Lunch Break Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard date & time formulas. Work out net worked hours after lunch. Enter your clock-in and clock-out times and lunch minutes; the tool subtracts the break and shows the result in decimal hours and H:MM, and it handles shifts that cross midnight. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Lunch Break Calculator

Turn a shift into net paid time. Enter when you clocked in and out and how many minutes of lunch to remove; the tool measures the gap between the two clock times and subtracts the break.

If clock-out is earlier than clock-in it adds 24 hours, so overnight shifts still add up. The net result appears both as decimal hours and as H:MM.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

inMin = (+ip[0]) × 60 + (+ip[1])

outMin = (+op[0]) × 60 + (+op[1])

Derived directly from the verified calculation function in the tool engine.

Calculation Example

Enter a Clock In of 09:00, a Clock Out of 17:30, and 45 for Lunch (minutes). The span is 510 minutes; removing the 45-minute lunch leaves 465 minutes of net work.

That shows as 7.75 h for Net Worked (decimal) and 7:45 for Net Worked (H:MM).

Key Benefits

  • Subtracts the lunch break from the clock span to give net worked time
  • Shows the result both as decimal hours and as H:MM
  • Handles overnight shifts by adding 24 hours when clock-out is before clock-in

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter clock-in
Set the time you started in the Clock In field.
  2. Enter clock-out
Set the time you finished in the Clock Out field.
  3. Set lunch and calculate
Enter the unpaid minutes in Lunch (minutes), then press Calculate to see net worked time in decimal hours and H:MM.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
  • Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
  • Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
  • Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.

What it does not cover

  • Lunch Break Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
  • Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the tool adds 24 hours to the span and notes that the shift runs overnight.

It defaults to 30 minutes of unpaid lunch when the field is empty.

If subtracting lunch would give negative time, the tool refuses it and asks you to shorten the lunch.

It is the net worked minutes divided by 60, so 465 minutes becomes 7.75 hours.
