Date & Time

Month Calculator

Measure the gap between two dates as a number of whole months plus leftover days, using the calendar rather than a fixed average month length.

What this calculator does

The Month Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard date & time formulas. Measure the gap between two dates as a number of whole months plus leftover days, using the calendar rather than a fixed average month length. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Month Calculator

The Month Calculator finds how far apart two dates are, expressed as whole calendar months plus any leftover days. Enter a start date and an end date; the order does not matter because the tool always measures from the earlier date to the later one.

Rather than assuming every month is the same length, it counts calendar months and then borrows the length of the preceding month when the day-of-month does not divide evenly. That keeps the result accurate across February, 30-day months, and 31-day months alike.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

a = new Date(startRaw + 'T00:00:00')

b = new Date(endRaw + 'T00:00:00')

Derived directly from the verified calculation function in the tool engine.

Calculation Example

Enter a start date of January 15, 2024 and an end date of April 10, 2024.

  • Whole Months: 2
  • Leftover Days: 26
  • Combined: 2 mo 26 d

Interpretation shown: “These dates are 2 whole months and 26 days apart.” From January 15 to March 15 is two full months, and March 15 to April 10 adds 26 more days.

Key Benefits

  • Splits the gap into whole months and leftover days rather than a single decimal figure
  • Accepts the two dates in either order and sorts them automatically
  • Uses real calendar month lengths, so February and 31-day months are handled correctly
  • Shows a combined 'X mo Y d' summary alongside the individual figures

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
  • Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
  • Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
  • Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.

What it does not cover

  • Month Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
  • Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The calculator identifies the earlier and later date on its own and always reports a non-negative span.

When the later day-of-month is smaller than the earlier one, the tool subtracts a month and adds back the number of days in the month before the later date, so the leftover days reflect the actual calendar.

No. It counts calendar months directly, so the result respects the true length of each month rather than a fixed average.

It shows the same result as a compact string, for example '2 mo 26 d', combining the whole months and leftover days.
