Work Hours Calculator

Work out hours worked between a clock-in and clock-out time, minus an unpaid break, shown as a decimal and as H:MM. Overnight shifts are supported.

What this calculator does

The Work Hours Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard date & time formulas. Work out hours worked between a clock-in and clock-out time, minus an unpaid break, shown as a decimal and as H:MM. Overnight shifts are supported. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Work Hours Calculator

The Work Hours Calculator measures the time between a clock-in and a clock-out, subtracts any break in minutes, and shows the net worked time both as decimal hours and in H:MM format. If the clock-out is earlier than the clock-in, it treats the shift as running overnight.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

inMin = (+ip[0]) × 60 + (+ip[1])

outMin = (+op[0]) × 60 + (+op[1])

Derived directly from the verified calculation function in the tool engine.

Calculation Example

Inputs: Clock In 09:00, Clock Out 17:30, Break 30 minutes.

Result: Hours Worked (decimal) 8.00 h, Hours Worked (H:MM) 8:00. The summary reads: You worked 8.00 hours (8:00), after a 30-minute break.

Key Benefits

  • Subtracts an unpaid break in minutes from the shift length
  • Shows worked time as both decimal hours and H:MM
  • Handles overnight shifts by rolling the clock-out into the next day
  • Warns you if the break is longer than the time between clock-in and clock-out

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter clock-in and clock-out
Set the Clock In and Clock Out times.
  2. Enter the break
Type the Break in minutes, or 0 for none.
  3. Calculate
Click Calculate to read Hours Worked as a decimal and as H:MM.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
  • Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
  • Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
  • Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.

What it does not cover

  • Work Hours Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
  • Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in, it adds 24 hours to the clock-out, so a 22:00 to 06:00 shift is counted as 8 hours.

Yes, to two decimal places. For example 8 hours and 15 minutes shows as 8.25 h.

The tool shows an error rather than a negative result, asking you to check the break length.
