Date & Time

Bedtime Calculator

Bedtime Calculator uses 90-minute sleep cycles and your fall-asleep time to suggest what times to go to bed for a chosen wake-up time.

What this calculator does

The Bedtime Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard date & time formulas. Bedtime Calculator uses 90-minute sleep cycles and your fall-asleep time to suggest what times to go to bed for a chosen wake-up time. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Bedtime Calculator

The Bedtime Calculator works backwards from when you need to wake up. It counts full 90-minute sleep cycles and adds the time you usually take to drift off.

You get four suggested bedtimes – for 6, 5, 4, and 3 cycles – so you can pick the one that fits your evening while still waking at the end of a cycle.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

bedtime = new Date(wake.getTime() - (c × 90 + fallAsleepMin) × 60000)

timeStr = hh12 + ':' + (mm < 10 ? '0' : '') + mm + ' ' + ampm

Derived directly from the verified calculation function in the tool engine.

Calculation Example

For a wake-up time of 7:00 AM and 15 minutes to fall asleep:

  • 6 cycles = (6 × 90) + 15 = 555 min before 7:00 → 9:45 PM (9h sleep)
  • 5 cycles = 465 min → 11:15 PM (7.5h sleep)
  • 4 cycles = 375 min → 12:45 AM (6h sleep)
  • 3 cycles = 285 min → 2:15 AM (4.5h sleep)

Key Benefits

  • Times bedtime to the end of a 90-minute cycle so you wake less groggy
  • Factors in the minutes you take to actually fall asleep
  • Offers four options from 4.5 to 9 hours of sleep in one view
  • Shows each bedtime in easy-to-read 12-hour AM/PM format

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Set your wake-up time
Choose the time you need to be awake in the Desired Wake-Up Time field.
  2. Enter fall-asleep minutes
Type how long you usually take to fall asleep, or leave it blank to use the default of 15 minutes.
  3. Calculate
Press Calculate and choose one of the recommended bedtimes, each labelled with its cycle count and hours of sleep.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
  • Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
  • Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
  • Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.

What it does not cover

  • Bedtime Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
  • Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator assumes a 90-minute cycle, which is a common average for a full light-to-deep-to-REM sleep cycle.

It adds the minutes you take to fall asleep so the cycles are counted from when you are actually asleep, not from when you get into bed.

Pick the option whose total sleep suits you. Six cycles give about 9 hours; three cycles give about 4.5 hours.
