EV Charging Cost Calculator

Estimate what one charging session costs from the energy you add, your price per kWh, and the charger's efficiency. Because some energy is lost during charging, the tool grosses up the energy pulled from the wall before multiplying by price.

What this calculator does

The EV Charging Cost Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard auto loans formulas. Estimate what one charging session costs from the energy you add, your price per kWh, and the charger's efficiency. Because some energy is lost during charging, the tool grosses up the energy pulled from the wall before multiplying by price. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate for planning rather than financial advice.

About EV Charging Cost Calculator

This calculator turns three numbers — the energy you add in kWh, your electricity price per kWh, and the charging efficiency — into the cost of a single charge. It first divides the energy added by the efficiency to find how much the charger actually draws from the wall, then multiplies that draw by your price.

It runs in your browser with no sign-up, so you can try different prices or efficiency values instantly.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Charging Cost = f(Energy Added (kWh), Electricity Price ($/kWh), Charging Efficiency (%))

Calculated according to standard finance formulas implemented in the calculator core.

Calculation Example

Say you add 50 kWh at an electricity price of $0.16/kWh with a charging efficiency of 85%.

Energy drawn from the wall = 50 ÷ (85 ÷ 100) = 58.8235 kWh (shown as 58.8). Charging Cost = 58.8235 × 0.16 = $9.41.

Key Benefits

  • Separates the energy you add from the larger amount actually drawn at the wall, so charging losses are not ignored
  • Shows the session cost in dollars and cents from your own price per kWh
  • Lets you compare an off-peak rate against a standard rate by changing a single field
  • Runs free in your browser with no sign-up

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter energy added
Type the kWh added during the session in the Energy Added (kWh) field.
  2. Enter your price
Fill in Electricity Price ($/kWh) with the rate you pay.
  3. Enter efficiency
Put the charger's efficiency in Charging Efficiency (%); it must be greater than 0.
  4. Calculate
Press Calculate to see the Charging Cost.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Rates and contributions are assumed to stay constant for the whole period unless the form asks for them separately.
  • Results use standard financial formulas and ignore fees, penalties and promotional terms that are not entered above.
  • Inflation, tax changes and market volatility are not modelled unless a field for them is provided.
  • Amounts are unit-agnostic: results are returned in the same currency you enter.

What it does not cover

  • EV Charging Cost Calculator produces estimates for education and planning, not a quote, offer or professional advice.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when fees, taxes, rounding rules or provider-specific terms apply.
  • Local regulations and tax rules vary by country and change over time; verify current rules for your jurisdiction.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For decisions with lasting financial impact, confirm the numbers with a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some energy is lost during charging, so the tool divides the energy added by the efficiency to estimate the larger amount drawn from the wall, and you pay for that drawn amount. A lower efficiency means more energy drawn and a higher cost.

Efficiency must be greater than 0. If you enter 0 or a negative number, the calculator shows an inline error instead of a result.

No. It multiplies only the energy drawn by the price per kWh you enter, so any fixed fees or taxes are not part of the figure.
