About Crypto Capital Gains Calculator
The Crypto Capital Gains Calculator accepts Buy Price per coin, Sell Price per coin, and Quantity. It subtracts Buy Price from Sell Price and multiplies the difference by Quantity to display Capital Gain in dollars. It also divides the per-coin price difference by Buy Price and multiplies by 100 to display Return. Quantity therefore scales the dollar gain or loss, while the percentage output reflects the price change between the two entered prices.
The calculation is a direct transaction-level arithmetic estimate, not a determination of tax liability. The form contains no controls for tax rates, jurisdiction, holding period, acquisition dates, cost-basis methods, transaction lots, or fees. When Buy Price is zero or negative, the shipped callback still calculates Capital Gain but displays an em dash for Return because its denominator is not greater than zero.
Formula & Mathematical Calculation
Capital Gain = (Sell Price − Buy Price) × Quantity
Return (%) = [(Sell Price − Buy Price) ÷ Buy Price] × 100
Buy Price and Sell Price are entered in dollars per coin, and Quantity is the number of coins included. Sell Price minus Buy Price is the per-coin change; multiplying that change by Quantity gives Capital Gain. Return compares the same per-coin change with Buy Price, so Quantity does not enter the percentage equation. The callback displays Return only when Buy Price is greater than zero. Otherwise, it leaves Capital Gain available but renders an em dash for Return.
Calculation Example
Example: Enter Buy Price of $20,000 per coin, Sell Price of $35,000 per coin, and Quantity of 0.5. The per-coin difference is $35,000 − $20,000 = $15,000. Multiplying by 0.5 produces a Capital Gain of $7,500. For Return, $15,000 ÷ $20,000 × 100 = 75%. The shipped result panel displays Capital Gain: $7500 and Return: 75 %. Quantity affects the dollar result but not the percentage price change. This example does not add transaction fees or calculate tax owed, because the shipped form has no fee, tax-rate, date, holding-period, jurisdiction, or cost-basis controls.

Assumptions & Limitations
What the calculation assumes
- Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
- Rates and contributions are assumed to stay constant for the whole period unless the form asks for them separately.
- Results use standard financial formulas and ignore fees, penalties and promotional terms that are not entered above.
- Inflation, tax changes and market volatility are not modelled unless a field for them is provided.
- Amounts are unit-agnostic: results are returned in the same currency you enter.
What it does not cover
- Crypto Capital Gains Calculator produces estimates for education and planning, not a quote, offer or professional advice.
- Real-world outcomes differ when fees, taxes, rounding rules or provider-specific terms apply.
- Local regulations and tax rules vary by country and change over time; verify current rules for your jurisdiction.
- Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
- For decisions with lasting financial impact, confirm the numbers with a qualified professional.
