About Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator is a free online tool that works out the tip you should add to any bill. Enter the bill amount and the tip percentage, and it instantly returns the tip in dollars and the full total you would pay.

Use it before you pay at a restaurant, salon, or taxi, or whenever you want to check the arithmetic on a suggested tip. Because it accepts any bill amount and any percentage, it also works for custom gratuities on deliveries, hotel stays, and other services.

The math runs entirely in your browser, so your numbers stay private and results appear the moment you press Calculate.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip % ÷ 100

Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

Where: Bill Amount = your pre-tip bill in dollars, Tip % = the gratuity percentage you choose.

Calculation Example

For a bill of $50 with a tip of 18%, the tip amount is $9 and the total you pay is $59. The tool multiplies the bill by the percentage to get the tip, then adds it back to the bill for the total. Enter your own bill amount and tip percentage to see both figures instantly.

Key Benefits

  • Works out the exact tip by multiplying your bill by the percentage you enter, so no mental math is needed.
  • Adds the tip back onto the bill and shows the full total you would pay in one step.
  • Accepts any bill amount and any tip percentage, including decimals and custom rates.
  • Blocks negative bill amounts before calculating, so the result is always meaningful.
  • Shows the tip, the total, and a short summary line the moment you press Calculate.

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount
Type your pre-tip bill in dollars in the Bill Amount field, for example 50.
  2. Enter the tip percentage
Type the tip percentage you want to apply in the Tip field, for example 18.
  3. Press Calculate
The tool multiplies the bill amount by the tip percentage and divides by 100 to get the tip.
  4. Read the tip and total
The Tip Amount box shows the tip in dollars, and the Total box shows the bill plus that tip.
  5. Check the summary
A short line under the results restates the tip percentage, the bill, and the tip amount.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Rates and contributions are assumed to stay constant for the whole period unless the form asks for them separately.
  • Results use standard financial formulas and ignore fees, penalties and promotional terms that are not entered above.
  • Inflation, tax changes and market volatility are not modelled unless a field for them is provided.
  • Amounts are unit-agnostic: results are returned in the same currency you enter.

What it does not cover

  • Tip Calculator produces estimates for education and planning, not a quote, offer or professional advice.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when fees, taxes, rounding rules or provider-specific terms apply.
  • Local regulations and tax rules vary by country and change over time; verify current rules for your jurisdiction.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For decisions with lasting financial impact, confirm the numbers with a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

The total is the original bill plus the calculated tip, which is the full amount you would pay.

Yes. The Tip field accepts any percentage value, including decimals, so you can enter standard or custom rates.
