About Stock Market Return Calculator

The Stock Market Return Calculator works out the total return on a stock trade including dividends. It adds the price change from buy to sell to any dividends received, giving the gain per share, then divides that gain by the buy price to express the total return as a percentage.

Total return is the honest measure of how an investment performed because it folds dividends into the price gain rather than looking at price alone. A stock that barely moved can still have delivered a solid return once its dividends are counted. The calculator applies both steps directly to the figures you enter.

Enter the buy price, the sell price, and the dividends received per share, press Calculate, and read the gain per share and the total return.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Gain per Share = Sell Price − Buy Price + Dividends Received

Total Return (%) = ( Gain per Share ÷ Buy Price ) × 100

Calculation Example

Buying at $100, selling at $130, and collecting $5 in dividends gives a gain of $130 − $100 + $5 = $35 per share, a total return of ($35 ÷ $100) × 100 = 35%.

Key Benefits

  • Counts dividends alongside price change for a true total return.
  • Shows the dollar gain per share next to the percentage return.
  • Handles a loss the same way when the sell price is below the buy price.
  • Requires a buy price above zero, avoiding a divide-by-zero result.

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter the buy price
Type the price you paid per share in the Buy Price field, for example 100.
  2. Enter the sell price
Type the price you sold (or would sell) per share in the Sell Price field, for example 130.
  3. Enter dividends received
Type the dividends collected per share in the Dividends Received field, for example 5.
  4. Press Calculate
The tool adds the price change and dividends for the gain per share, then divides by the buy price for the total return.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Rates and contributions are assumed to stay constant for the whole period unless the form asks for them separately.
  • Results use standard financial formulas and ignore fees, penalties and promotional terms that are not entered above.
  • Inflation, tax changes and market volatility are not modelled unless a field for them is provided.
  • Amounts are unit-agnostic: results are returned in the same currency you enter.

What it does not cover

  • Stock Market Return Calculator produces estimates for education and planning, not a quote, offer or professional advice.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when fees, taxes, rounding rules or provider-specific terms apply.
  • Local regulations and tax rules vary by country and change over time; verify current rules for your jurisdiction.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For decisions with lasting financial impact, confirm the numbers with a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator adds the sell-minus-buy price change to the dividends per share for the gain, then divides by the buy price. Buying at $100, selling at $130 with $5 of dividends gives $35 per share, a 35% total return.

Dividends are real cash the investment paid out. Ignoring them understates performance, especially for income stocks, so total return adds them to the price gain for the full picture.

Yes. If the sell price plus dividends is below the buy price, the gain per share is negative and the calculator returns a negative total return, showing a loss.

The buy price must be greater than zero, or the calculator stops with 'Buy price must be greater than 0.' since it is the denominator of the return.
