About Retirement Inflation Calculator
The Retirement Inflation Calculator shows how much a given level of annual spending will cost in the future once inflation has quietly eroded the value of a dollar. A budget that feels comfortable today will demand far more nominal dollars decades from now, and this tool makes that future price tag concrete so your retirement planning starts from a realistic number.
You enter three values: the annual expenses you would need in today's money, an assumed inflation rate as a percent, and the number of years until you reach that future point. The calculator grows today's expenses by compounding the inflation rate once for each year, and reports the annual amount you would actually need then. Enter your expenses, inflation rate, and years in the fields, press Calculate, and read the future annual cost in the result.
Formula & Mathematical Calculation
Future Annual Cost = Today's Expenses × (1 + Inflation Rate ÷ 100) raised to the power of the Number of Years
Calculation Example
Say you would need $60,000 a year in today's money, you assume 3% annual inflation, and you are looking 20 years ahead. The growth factor is 1 + 3 ÷ 100 = 1.03, raised to the power of 20, which equals about 1.80611. Multiply that by today's expenses: $60,000 × 1.80611 = $108,366.67. So spending that costs $60,000 today would need roughly $108,366.67 a year in 20 years.
Key Benefits
- Translates today's spending into the future dollars inflation will actually demand.
- Uses compounding, so each year's inflation builds on the last rather than adding up in a straight line.
- Helps you set a retirement income target that will not fall short decades from now.
- Lets you compare gentle and aggressive inflation assumptions side by side.
- Makes long horizons tangible by showing the cost gap between now and your target year.
