Paver Calculator

Count the pavers a patio needs. Enter the patio area plus each paver's width and length in inches; the tool converts one paver to square feet, divides the area by it and rounds up, then adds a 10% waste allowance.

What this calculator does

The Paver Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard construction & home formulas. Count the pavers a patio needs. Enter the patio area plus each paver's width and length in inches; the tool converts one paver to square feet, divides the area by it and rounds up, then adds a 10% waste allowance. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Paver Calculator

Provide the patio area in square feet and the paver's width and length in inches. The tool converts the paver's footprint to square feet by dividing each dimension by 12 and multiplying them together.

It then divides the patio area by that paver size and rounds up to a whole number of pavers, and rounds up a second figure that adds 10% for cuts and breakage. It is free and runs in your browser.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Pavers Needed = f(Patio Area (ft²), Paver Width (in), Paver Length (in))

Calculated according to standard construction formulas implemented in the calculator core.

Calculation Example

Enter Patio Area 120 ft², Paver Width 6 in, and Paver Length 6 in.

Paver size = (6 ÷ 12) × (6 ÷ 12) = 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25 ft².

Pavers = ceil(120 ÷ 0.25) = ceil(480) = 480.

With 10% waste = ceil(480 × 1.1) = ceil(528) = 528.

Key Benefits

  • Works out paver coverage from width and length in inches, so any paver size fits
  • Rounds the paver count up to whole units, since you cannot buy a fraction of a paver
  • Adds a separate 10% waste figure for cuts and breakage
  • Free and runs in the browser with no sign-up

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter the patio area
Type the area to be paved in square feet into the Patio Area (ft2) field.
  2. Enter the paver size
Type the paver's width and length in inches into the Paver Width (in) and Paver Length (in) fields.
  3. Calculate
Press Calculate and read Pavers Needed and With 10% Waste in the result boxes.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
  • Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
  • Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
  • Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.

What it does not cover

  • Paver Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
  • Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tool uses a ceiling function, so a result like 479.something becomes 480 whole pavers, because partial pavers cannot be purchased.

Each dimension in inches is divided by 12 to get feet, then the two are multiplied, giving the paver area in square feet.

It takes the paver count, multiplies by 1.1, and rounds up, giving a padded quantity to cover cuts and breakage.

All three values must be positive; otherwise the tool prompts you to enter positive dimensions.
