About Income Tax Calculator

The Income Tax Calculator estimates 2024 U.S. federal income tax from gross annual income, filing status, and either the configured standard deduction or an entered itemized deduction. It reports taxable income through its bracket breakdown, total federal tax, effective rate, marginal rate, and income after this estimated federal tax.

The shipped calculation does not subtract state income tax or payroll tax. Its take-home figure is gross income minus estimated federal income tax only.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Taxable income = max(0, Gross income − Deduction)

Federal tax = Sum of taxable income within each 2024 bracket × that bracket rate

Effective rate = Federal tax ÷ Gross income × 100
Post-federal-tax income = max(0, Gross income − Federal tax)

Configured standard deductions are $14,600 for Single and Married Filing Separately, $29,200 for Married Filing Jointly, and $21,900 for Head of Household. Itemized mode uses the positive amount entered.

Calculation Example

Example: A Single filer with $65,000 gross income and the $14,600 standard deduction has $50,400 taxable income. Tax is $1,160.00 in the 10% bracket, $4,266.00 in the 12% bracket, and $715.00 in the 22% bracket, totaling $6,141.00. The effective rate is 9.4%, the marginal bracket is 22%, and post-federal-tax income is $58,859.00 or $4,904.92/month.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Rates and contributions are assumed to stay constant for the whole period unless the form asks for them separately.
  • Results use standard financial formulas and ignore fees, penalties and promotional terms that are not entered above.
  • Inflation, tax changes and market volatility are not modelled unless a field for them is provided.
  • Amounts are unit-agnostic: results are returned in the same currency you enter.

What it does not cover

  • Income Tax Calculator produces estimates for education and planning, not a quote, offer or professional advice.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when fees, taxes, rounding rules or provider-specific terms apply.
  • Local regulations and tax rules vary by country and change over time; verify current rules for your jurisdiction.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For decisions with lasting financial impact, confirm the numbers with a qualified professional.
