Gable Roof Calculator
Enter a building's length, width, and roof pitch to get the total gable roof surface area in square feet plus the rafter length along one slope. The tool builds one sloped plane from the pitch and doubles it to cover both sides of the ridge.
What this calculator does
The Gable Roof Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard construction & home formulas. Enter a building's length, width, and roof pitch to get the total gable roof surface area in square feet plus the rafter length along one slope. The tool builds one sloped plane from the pitch and doubles it to cover both sides of the ridge. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Gable Roof Calculator
A gable roof has two rectangular planes that meet at a central ridge. This calculator takes the building length, the building width, and the pitch (rise per 12 of horizontal run) and returns the combined surface area of both planes along with the length of a single rafter.
The run is half the building width, the rise is run × pitch ÷ 12, and the rafter is the hypotenuse of that right triangle. Multiplying the rafter length by the building length gives one plane, and the result is doubled for the full roof.
Formula & Mathematical Calculation
Roof Surface Area (ft²) = f(Building Length (ft), Building Width (ft), Pitch (rise per 12))
Calculated according to standard construction formulas implemented in the calculator core.
Calculation Example
For a building 40 ft long and 24 ft wide with a 6-in-12 pitch:
- Run = 24 ÷ 2 = 12 ft
- Rise = 12 × 6 ÷ 12 = 6 ft
- Rafter = √(12² + 6²) = √180 = 13.42 ft
- Roof area = 2 × 40 × 13.42 = 1073.3 ft²
The tool shows Roof Surface Area 1073.3 ft² and Rafter Length 13.42 ft, and notes two planes of about 537 ft² each.
Key Benefits
- Turns three simple measurements into both roof area and rafter length in one step
- Uses the pitch you enter to derive the rise, so any rise-per-12 slope works
- Reports the surface area for both roof planes together, ready for material estimates
- Free, runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up
How to Use this Calculator
-
Enter the building length
Type the length of the building in feet into the Building Length (ft) field, such as 40. -
Enter the building width
Type the width of the building in feet into the Building Width (ft) field; this is halved to find the horizontal run. -
Enter the pitch
Type the roof pitch as rise per 12 into the Pitch (rise per 12) field, for example 6 for a 6-in-12 slope. -
Calculate
Press Calculate to see the total Roof Surface Area in square feet and the Rafter Length in feet.
Assumptions & Limitations
What the calculation assumes
- Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
- Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
- Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
- Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
- Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.
What it does not cover
- Gable Roof Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
- Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
- Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
- Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
- For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.
