Deck Calculator

Enter deck length, width, and board width to get the deck area and how many rows of decking boards are needed across the width. A 1/4 inch gap between boards is included.

What this calculator does

The Deck Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard construction & home formulas. Enter deck length, width, and board width to get the deck area and how many rows of decking boards are needed across the width. A 1/4 inch gap between boards is included. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate rather than a certified or official figure.

About Deck Calculator

Decking boards run the length of a deck and are laid in rows across its width. This calculator finds the deck area from length times width, then works out how many board rows span the width once a small gap is allowed between boards.

Each board is treated as occupying its own width plus a 1/4 inch gap, so the number of rows is ceil(width in inches ÷ (board width + 0.25)). Rows are always rounded up so the surface is fully covered.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Deck Area (ft²) = f(Deck Length (ft), Deck Width (ft), Board Width (in))

Calculated according to standard construction formulas implemented in the calculator core.

Calculation Example

For a deck 16 ft long and 12 ft wide using 5.5 in boards:

  • Deck area = 16 × 12 = 192 ft²
  • Width in inches = 12 × 12 = 144 in
  • Rows = ceil(144 ÷ (5.5 + 0.25)) = ceil(144 ÷ 5.75) = ceil(25.04) = 26

The tool shows Deck Area 192 ft² and 26 rows of 5.5-inch boards, each 16 ft long.

Key Benefits

  • Gives both the deck square footage and a row count for decking boards
  • Allows a 1/4 inch gap between boards so the row count reflects real spacing
  • Rounds the number of rows up so the deck surface is fully covered
  • Free, runs in the browser, with no sign-up

How to Use this Calculator

  1. Enter the deck length
Type the deck length in feet into the Deck Length (ft) field, such as 16. This is also the length of each board.
  2. Enter the deck width
Type the deck width in feet into the Deck Width (ft) field, such as 12. The rows of boards span this width.
  3. Enter the board width
Type the width of a single decking board in inches into the Board Width (in) field, such as 5.5.
  4. Calculate
Press Calculate to see the deck area and the number of board rows needed across the width.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Any rate or interval you enter is assumed to hold for the whole period unless the form asks for it separately.
  • Results use standard published formulas and account only for the values entered above.
  • Rounding is applied for display; the underlying calculation uses your full precision.
  • Results are returned in the same units you enter, unless the tool states the output unit.

What it does not cover

  • Deck Calculator produces a calculated result for reference and learning, not a certified or official measurement.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when tolerances, rounding rules or local standards apply.
  • Definitions and standards vary by region and change over time; verify the convention that applies to your case.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For work where the result carries real consequences, confirm it against an authoritative source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Each board is treated as its own width plus a fixed 1/4 inch gap, so a 5.5 inch board occupies 5.75 inches when the rows are counted.

It is always rounded up. A 12 ft width divided by 5.75 inch spacing gives 25.04, which rounds up to 26 rows so the deck is fully covered.

The row count is the number of board runs across the width, each spanning the full deck length you entered. In the example that is 26 boards, each 16 ft long.

The length, width, and board width must all be positive. If any is zero or blank the tool shows an inline message asking for positive dimensions and no result is shown.
