Auto Loan APR Calculator

Reverse-engineers the APR on an auto loan from the loan amount, monthly payment, and term in months, and shows the estimated APR and the total interest paid.

What this calculator does

The Auto Loan APR Calculator estimates your result instantly from the values you enter, using standard auto loans formulas. Reverse-engineers the APR on an auto loan from the loan amount, monthly payment, and term in months, and shows the estimated APR and the total interest paid. Calculations run in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server, and the output is an estimate for planning rather than financial advice.

About Auto Loan APR Calculator

If you already know the payment but not the rate, this tool works backward. Enter the loan amount, the monthly payment, and the term in months, and it searches for the annual percentage rate that reproduces that payment.

The result is an estimated APR plus the total interest you would pay over the term.

Formula & Mathematical Calculation

Calculation Method

  1. Compute pv=pay × (1-pow(1+r,-n)) ÷ r

Calculation Example

Say you borrow $25,000, pay $480 a month, and the term is 60 months.

  • The calculator solves for the monthly rate r where 25,000 = 480 × (1 − (1 + r)−60) ÷ r.
  • That rate converts to an Estimated APR of 5.714 %.
  • Total Interest = 480 × 60 − 25,000 = 28,800 − 25,000 = $3800.

Key Benefits

  • Estimates the APR when you know the payment but not the rate.
  • Uses a numerical search so the rate matches your actual payment.
  • Shows the total interest implied by that payment and term.
  • Helps sanity-check a quoted rate against the payment offered.

Assumptions & Limitations

What the calculation assumes

  • Every value you enter is treated as an exact, known amount.
  • Rates and contributions are assumed to stay constant for the whole period unless the form asks for them separately.
  • Results use standard financial formulas and ignore fees, penalties and promotional terms that are not entered above.
  • Inflation, tax changes and market volatility are not modelled unless a field for them is provided.
  • Amounts are unit-agnostic: results are returned in the same currency you enter.

What it does not cover

  • Auto Loan APR Calculator produces estimates for education and planning, not a quote, offer or professional advice.
  • Real-world outcomes differ when fees, taxes, rounding rules or provider-specific terms apply.
  • Local regulations and tax rules vary by country and change over time; verify current rules for your jurisdiction.
  • Figures are only as accurate as the inputs you supply — check them before acting on the result.
  • For decisions with lasting financial impact, confirm the numbers with a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the monthly payment times the term does not exceed the loan amount, there is no interest to solve for, so the calculator asks you to check your figures.

It repeatedly narrows a range of possible monthly rates until the payment formula matches your loan amount, then multiplies that monthly rate by 1200 to get the APR.

It is a close numerical estimate based purely on the amount, payment, and term you enter, and it excludes fees that a lender's APR might include.

Months. Enter 60 for a five-year loan or 48 for a four-year loan.
